Carpal tunnel syndrome is a chronic pain condition caused by nerve irritation. The median nerve travels from the forearm through the wrist and into the hand, providing sensation in the palm. When this nerve becomes compressed inside the narrow carpal tunnel of the wrist due to inflammation or thickening of the tendons, it can cause discomfort, weakness, or numbness in the palm and hand. This is called carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is often caused by injury or trauma to the wrist, as well as repetitive motions or postures that can cause inflammation of the structures of the wrist and compression of the nerve. Treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome include anti-inflammatory medications and exercises to stretch and strengthen the wrist. If these treatments are unsuccessful, surgery may be recommended.
